XML

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple, very flexible text format derived from SGML (ISO 8879). Originally designed to meet the challenges of large-scale electronic publishing, XML is also playing an increasingly important role in the exchange of a wide variety of data on the Web and elsewhere.

The Main Difference Between XML and HTML
XML was designed to carry data.

XML is not a replacement for HTML.XML and HTML were designed with different goals:
XML was designed to describe data and to focus on what data is.HTML was designed to display data and to focus on how data looks.
HTML is about displaying information, while XML is about describing information.

XML was not designed to DO anything.
XML was created to structure, store and to send information.

XML is not a replacement for HTML.
In future Web development it is most likely that XML will be used to describe the data, while HTML will be used to format and display the same data.
XML is a cross-platform, software and hardware independent tool for transmitting information.

XML will be as important to the future of the Web as HTML has been to the foundation of the Web and that XML will be the most common tool for all data manipulation and data transmission.

1.HTML is presentaton language where as XML is not either a programing language or a presentation language. It is used to transfer data between applications and databases.
2.HTML is not case-sensitive where as XML is case-sensitive.
3.In XML we can define our own tags as it is not possible in HTML.
4.In XML it is mandatory to close each and every tag where as in HTML it is not required.
5.XML describes the data where as HTML only defines the data.
